Before you apply

There are some important things that you need to understand before applying to enter the Australian Defence Force:

You must be either an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Australia to apply.

A medical assessment and criminal history check will be conducted by Defence Force Recruiting.

Information held by Defence relating to any previous service you may have had with the Australian Defence Force or previous application you may have made to enter the Australian Defence Force may be considered in assessing your application.

If in an application to enter the Australian Defence Force you provide a false answer to a question or false information, with the intention to deceive, you may be guilty of an offence under the Defence Force Disciplinary Act 1982. This may also result in termination of your enlistment or appointment.

The Australian Defence Force has a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of or involvement with prohibited substances by its members.

If your application to enter the Australian Defence Force is successful, you may be required to serve in an operational or warlike role in Australia or overseas.

The information supplied in this application is collected by Defence, through Defence Force Recruiting, for the purpose of assessing your eligibility and suitability for service with the Australian Defence Force, including the undertaking of medical (including psychological) assessments, and for related purposes including research directed at improving the recruitment process.

Personal information about you may be used by Defence and disclosed to the Australian Federal Police and other agencies or persons for the purpose of obtaining information related to the ADF recruitment process. If your application is not successful, the information will be retained in accordance with the Archives Act 1983.
